Any setback could not only open up another job (at least temporarily), but lock up Okert8217s already strong hold on an Opening Day roster spot. While he only threw 14 MLB frames in his debut last year, Okert recorded a strikeout per inning and also racked up sixty punchouts to go with just 11 walks in his 47 13 Triple-A frames. Osich was a similar story entering camp last year, but struggled badly in his sophomore campaign (4.71 ERA, 6.2 K9, 4.7 BB9 in 36 13 innings) and seems destined for a reboot. The other lefty, Reynolds, has an outside shot at factoring in despite his lack of recent contributions in the majors, though perhaps that8217s mostly plausible in the event that Smith is shelved. On the righty side of the equation, Gearrin and Kontos seem to have the inside track. Gearrin bounced back from two injury-limited seasons to post a 4.28 ERA, though it came along with a solid 8.4 K9 and 2.6 BB9. Kontos, meanwhile, has produced outstanding results in recent years (2.49 ERA in 159 innings) while he has averaged only 6.0 K9 against 2.4 BB9, he has managed to suppress the runs by generating lots of weak contact (.260 lifetime BABIP). Those pitchers could be challenged, though, and it8217s worth bearing in mind their arb deals aren8217t guaranteed (so far as has been reported, at least). Hernandez is fresh off of an uneven year in which he landed with a 3.84 ERA over 72 23 innings while he coughed up four free passes per nine, he also racked up 9.9 K9 and showed he was healthy. Morris and Ramirez have more to prove, given their health situations, but have big arms and have had success in the majors in the past. The above-noted Suarez (if not one of the optionable rotation candidates) could also factor here if the Giants elect to keep a long man 8212 and especially if they choose to forego an extra position player on the bench. Dan Slania is another name to consider, perhaps he showed well in the upper minors last year and could surprise in camp. Prediction: I8217ll go with a somewhat conventional outlook here, predicting that Gearrin and Kontos keep their jobs and are joined by Okert. Just to mix things up, though, I8217ll also guess that Smith is unable to start the year in the majors, opening the door to the team preventing Hernandez from opting out by placing him on the active roster. Several execs noted the difficulty of committing to a rebuild, while also emphasizing the need to avoid being stuck in a middle-ground. For White Sox GM Rick Hahn, who has launched a rebuilding effort, 8220staying the course is essential once you pick a direction.8221 Speaking of the White Sox . former lefty Mark Buehrle discussed the team8217s just-announced decision to retire his number. Buehrle says he more or less decided he8217d retire not long after signing his last contract, a free-agent deal that took him away from the Chicago organization for the first time as a professional. 8220The reason I didnt say anything, I didnt want all the attention,8221 he said of his quiet exit from the sport, which had left many wondering whether he8217d pitch again. 8220Ive always told people I was a young guy that came into the big leagues unknown. Kind of snuck into the big leagues and I wanted to kind of sneak my way out.8221 Whereas Buehrle entered the game quietly and steadily flourished, righty Daniel Bard flashed great promise before washing out of the majors with sudden control problems and injuries. Now, he8217s back in camp with the Cardinals . and as GammonsDaily reports (with a video), Bard hasn8217t lost any of his arm strength even as he works on a new delivery. Bard8217s career path mirrored somewhat that of former Cardinals hurler Rick Ankiel 8212 who later reinvented himself as an outfielder. As Derrick Good of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes. Ankiel has decided to tell his story of dealing with the sudden inability to command the baseball. The MVP Sports client will reportedly receive a 1.5MM guarantee and can earn up to 2.5MM worth of incentives based primarily on games started. The Braves had an open 40-man roster spot, so no corresponding move is necessary to accommodate the signing. Atlanta8217s 40-man roster is now full. Suzuki, 33, hit .258.301.403 with eight homers over 373 plate appearances for the Twins last season. That somewhat modest output that still represented a big improvement from a dire 2015 season for the veteran catcher, though it fell short of Suzuki8217s strong 2014 campaign (.288.343.383 in 503 PA) that earned him an All-Star berth. In Atlanta, Suzuki joins Tyler Flowers as the Braves8217 top catching options. A traditional platoon isn8217t an option since both are right-handed hitters, though Flowers is likely to get the bulk of starts behind the plate given his superior pitch-framing abilities. Both Baseball Prospectus and StatCorner ranked Flowers as one of the game8217s best framers last season, while Suzuki was ranked near the back of the pack. (Suzuki8217s defensive issues reportedly played a part in a relative lack of trade interest in his services last summer.) The Braves have been looking for catching help for much of the offseason, heavily pursuing Jason Castro and also being linked in rumors to the likes of Welington Castillo, Nick Hundley . Brian McCann and Matt Wieters . Suzuki represents something of a fallback option to those higher-profile names, and with Atlanta now ostensibly set behind the plate, it further limits the market for the still-unsigned Wieters and Hundley. Rosenthal notes that with Suzuki now in the mix for the Braves, backup Anthony Recker could receive some trade interest from other teams. Atlanta has also added Blake Lalli and David Freitas as minor league depth this winter, and already acquired and then traded away veteran Tuffy Gosewisch . The 37-year-old Moylan looked like he might be entering a new phase of his career in 2015, when, after having Tommy John surgery, he signed a two-year minor-league deal with the Braves with the idea that he would coach while he was recovering. He did return to the mound last season, though, and this year he8217s pitched 44 23 effective innings in the Royals8217 bullpen, posting a 3.43 ERA, 6.9 K9 and 3.2 BB9 while thriving against righties. Here are couple more notes on potential AL free agents. Geography will be a consideration when Twins catcher Kurt Suzuki picks a team as a free agent this winter, Mike Berardino of the Pioneer Press tweets. Suzuki8217s family lives in the Los Angeles area. Suzuki has recovered somewhat from a poor 2015 season to post a .258.301.403 line in his walk year, although it remains to be seen how he8217ll fare on the free agent market, which currently is slated to feature competition like Matt Wieters . Jason Castro and the now-injured Wilson Ramos . Speaking of Wieters, the veteran isn8217t looking too far ahead with regard to his future with the Orioles . Dan Connolly of BaltimoreBaseball writes. Wieters was a free agent last season, and ended up accepting the Orioles8217 qualifying offer, an outcome he says he couldn8217t have predicted months before. 8220 It was different than I would have thought the process would have been last year and itll probably be different this year then I think it will be this year ,8221 he says. 8220 I dont like thinking about things that I actually have no idea how they are going to go .8221 The 30-year-old Wieters hasn8217t had a strong season by his standards, batting .241.301.395, although he8217s stayed healthy enough to accumulate 456 plate appearances. He likely has more on his mind than free agency right now anyway, given that the Orioles are still fighting for a Wild Card spot. By Jeff Todd August 31, 2016 at 9:08am CDT The interest around the league in Twins catcher Kurt Suzuki is 8220muted at best,8221 Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer-Press reports (Twitter links ). It seems rather unlikely, then, that he8217ll end up joining a new organization today, before the deadline for teams to add postseason-eligible players. While Suzuki has produced a roughly league-average batting line (.275.318.417), which is quite good for a catcher, we8217ve heard mention on several occasions about increasing concerns with his work behind the dish. That may help explain the lack of interest in the veteran, who has helped teams fill needs down the stretch in years past. Suzuki has cleared waivers. so he can be traded freely. But that has been the case for some time. A few contenders have gone on to add different backstops while others are, perhaps, satisfied with what they have on hand. 8220It would take an injury to create any kind of market,8221 a source tells Berardino. Suzuki is owed 1.05MM from the start of September to year8217s end, by Berardino8217s calculations, which is a fairly modest but not inconsequential sum. His vesting option is no longer a consideration, so that isn8217t a hindrance. Even if Minnesota finds a surprise, late-breaking taker, the report suggests that the team would anticipate only a minimal return 8212 perhaps largely consisting of some salary relief. By Steve Adams August 31, 2016 at 12:00am CDT Before diving into the names, a few items bear repeating. The majority of Major League players will be placed on trade waivers this month, with most instances going unreported. There are undoubtedly players (quite a few of them, most likely) who have already cleared waivers but have not been reported to have done so. Players can be traded into September, as well, but only those traded on or before Aug. 31 will be eligible for the postseason with their new teams, so there8217s some urgency for contending clubs to complete deals by month8217s end. And, of course, for those who aren8217t familiar with the inner-workings of waiver trades, MLBTR published a full explanation of how August trades work earlier this month. Onto the known names8230 Ryan Braun (link ): Although Braun has slashed an excellent .315.377.551 with 24 homers and 14 steals through 454 plate appearances this season, his pricey contract enabled him to slip through waivers. Braun, 32, is owed 76MM through 2021, and any team acquiring him would likely need Milwaukee to pick up a sizable chunk of his contract, according to FOX Sports8217 Ken Rosenthal. That doesn8217t seem to bode well for the possibility of a trade this month. Ervin Santana (link ): Santana, 33, is due 13.5MM per year through 2018, which makes him a fairly expensive investment, but he8217s in the midst of another fine season. The righty has been among the few bright spots for the last-place Twins, having recorded a 3.54 ERA, 6.9 K9 and 2.38 BB9 in 147 13 innings. Given that he cleared waivers, the Twins might have to eat some of Santana8217s contract if they wish to move him for a decent return. However, Minnesota reportedly needed to be 8220overwhelmed8221 to deal Santana in July, and it8217s doubtful their bullish opinion of him has changed since then. Ryan Howard (link ): It seems as if any possibility of a Howard trade has gone out the window with his time with the Phillies drawing to an increasingly pleasant end. But he does still deliver more pure power than most hitters 8212 albeit almost exclusively against righties 8212 with 19 long balls in less than half a season worth of plate appearances. Matt Wieters (link ): Not only is Wieters expensive (15.8MM salary this year), but he8217s also underperforming both offensively and defensively. Thus, with fellow backstops Kurt Suzuki and Brian McCann having already cleared waivers, it8217s no surprise that Wieters did, too. Regardless of his struggles, Wieters is the starting catcher for a playoff contender with no better in-house option in place, making a trade involving the impending free agent all the more unlikely. Scott Kazmir (link ): Kazmir is owed 16MM in each of the next two seasons, but he has the ability to opt out of his deal after this year. Kazmirs run prevention (4.41 ERA) has been a letdown in 132 23 innings this season, although he has recorded an outstanding K9 (9.02) to go with a 3.32 BB9 and a superb 15.2 percent infield fly rate. The positives weren8217t enough for anyone to claim Kazmir, though, and it8217s doubtful the injury-riddled Dodgers will move out a healthy starter in the middle of a playoff race. James Shields (link ): The right-hander was previously a high-end option that every team would8217ve loved to slot into its rotation. At 34, he8217s now pitching like a DFA candidate. The White Sox, who acquired Shields from the Padres earlier this year, owe him 10MM per season through 2018. Thanks largely to a plummeting strikeout rate and a propensity for allowing HRs, Shields has run up a 7.62 ERA in 69 23 innings with Chicago. Overall, he has a 5.98 ERA in 137 frames this year. While Shields is on track for a 10th straight 30-start season, there8217s no point in trading for someone who isn8217t at least keeping his team in games every fifth day. Nick Markakis (link ): The negatives seem to outweigh the positives with Markakis, who8217s on a 10.5MM salary through 2018 and doesn8217t bring the offensive value to the table that he used to. Since leaving Baltimore for Atlanta last year, the right fielder has hit .285.360.384 with a mere 12 HRs in 1,200-plus plate trips. The average and on-base percentage are clearly pluses. Fact is, though, a corner outfielder who has little power, doesn8217t grade well defensively and isn8217t all that cheap isn8217t too appealing. Mitch Moreland (link ): Moreland is amid his third straight 20-homer season and isn8217t overly expensive (5.7MM salary) in the last year of his contract, so it wouldn8217t have been shocking had someone claimed him. Instead, the lifetime .251.316.481 hitter got through waivers and looks likely to remain with World Series-contending Texas for the rest of the season. Matt Kemp (link ): Once an MVP-level player, the 31-year-old Kemp has fallen off thanks to defensive issues and a decline at the plate. As a roughly league-average hitter on a 21.5MM salary through 2019, he was fully expected to go unclaimed had the Braves placed him on waivers. They did, and that8217s exactly what happened. Atlanta8217s on the hook for 18MM per year of Kemp8217s money for the duration of his contract. The Padres, his previous team, make up the difference. For any deal to happen, the Braves would likely have to eat a hefty portion of that cash. Joakim Soria (link ): The 32-year-old Soria has become increasingly homer prone and displaying some concerning control issues in 2016, so it8217s not surprising that no team risked claiming the remaining 19.72MM that he is owed through the completion of the 2018 season. Soria8217s 92.8 mph average fastball is actually a career-high, and his strikeouts and ground-ball rate both remain sound, so perhaps he could be moved if Kansas City were to eat some of the remainder on that deal. Eric O8217Flaherty (link ): Once a powerhouse out of the Braves8217 bullpen, O8217Flaherty8217s second stint with Atlanta hasn8217t gone nearly as well. He8217s never fully regained his form after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2013, and his ERA in 2016 rested just shy of 7.00 when word of his clearing waivers broke. His 1.75MM salary wouldn8217t be prohibitive were he pitching well, but even opposing lefties have roughed up O8217Flaherty this season, and he8217s been positively obliterated by right-handed opponents. Kurt Suzuki (link ): The Twins8217 catcher was reported to have cleared waivers just yesterday. Unlike a number of players that clear waivers in the month of August, Suzuki is relatively affordable, making it something of a surprise that no teams placed a claim on him. While he8217s not regarded as a highly skilled defensive backstop, he8217s hitting .281.321.431, which is quite a step up from the league-average catcher (.242.311.380). He doesn8217t walk much, but he8217s also very tough to strike out (12.9), and he was owed just 1.54MM through season8217s end when he reportedly cleared on Aug. 16. Brian McCann (link ): It8217s no surprise that McCann cleared waivers, as he8217s owed a hefty 34MM beyond the 2016 campaign. McCann8217s offensive production has wilted a bit in recent weeks, and while his .232.333.404 batting line and 15 homers are still solid marks for a catcher, it8217s tough to imagine the Yankees moving him without absorbing a fair amount of the money that remains on his contract. Also standing in the way of a potential deal is the fact that teams looking for catching help beyond this year have a fair number of choices on the upcoming free agent market. One final note: outfielder Jeff Francoeur (link ) and catcher Carlos Ruiz (link ) were both reported to have cleared waivers as well, but each has already been traded to a new team, with Francoeur going to the Marlins and Ruiz going to the Dodgers. Cleveland catchers this season 8212 Yan Gomes (currently injured), Roberto Perez and Chris Gimenez 8212 have combined to bat a staggering .172.225.296 in 457 plate appearances. The company line has been that they8217re high on the defensive capabilities of each backstop, but no club in all of Major League Baseball has received worse production out of its catchers. How best to remedy that situation 8212 or whether they even need to 8212 is up for debate. Obvious Trade Candidates Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes today that Cleveland has had some discussions with the division-rival Twins about Kurt Suzuki in the past, but 8220there8217s nothing happening at the moment.8221 Suzuki cleared trade waivers yesterday, making him a logical candidate for any club in need of catching help. The main sticking point for Cleveland, it seems, is that Suzuki isn8217t regarded as a strong defender, and he would obviously be tasked with learning an entirely new pitching staff in a short amount of time in the event that the Indians made a move. That8217s a tall order for any catcher, and it could conceivably lead to further difficulty in framingblocking pitches if he8217s not fully familiar with the full arsenal of each pitcher he8217s catching. Then again, Suzuki is affordable (owed 1.5MM through season8217s end) and hitting .281.321.435 8212 an enormous upgrade over the offensive deficiencies that have plagued Cleveland catchers in 2016.Read more Another obvious candidate for Cleveland would be the only other catcher that is known at this time to have cleared trade waivers: Brian McCann . The defensive question marks that surround Suzuki aren8217t as prevalent with McCann. While the Yankee backstop is admittedly having a down season in terms of throwing out runners, his 23 percent is still better than Suzuki8217s 19 percent, and he8217s traditionally been more adept at controlling the running game. Likewise, McCann routinely posts above-average framing marks, per Baseball Prospectus, while Suzuki perennially ranks as one of the worst in the game at stealing extra strikes for his pitchers. It8217s probably a surprise to some that haven8217t paid close attention to see that Suzuki, though, has actually been the better hitter of the two this season in terms of both average and slugging percentage. The difficulty with regards to McCann, however, is that he8217s owed 34MM beyond this season, and there8217s almost certainly no way the Indians would be willing to take on that type of coin. The Yankees would have to eat a substantial amount of McCann8217s remaining salary for any type of serious consideration, and they8217d accordingly ask for a greater return in terms of prospects if they continue to shoulder the bulk of McCann8217s contract. On a speculative note, though, McCann would seem to be a good fit for the rotating catcherfirst basedesignated hitter role that prompted Jonathan Lucroy to veto a deal to Cleveland. And, speaking of no-trade clauses, McCann does have full no-trade rights under his deal with the Yankees, so he8217d have to approve of the move. Names That Could Become Available Derek Norris could (and perhaps should) be listed in the previous category, but there8217s no official word that he8217s cleared waivers yet so I kept him in this bucket for now. At any rate, the Padres8217 catcher has seen his bat go ice cold again in recent weeks after showing promise from May through mid-July. Norris got off to one of the worst starts of any big league hitter this year but largely righted the ship and looked to be hitting his way back into trade candidacy. But, in 80 plate appearances since the All-Star break, he8217s hitting .113.213.127, making him look more like a non-tender candidate than a trade candidate. Digging a bit deeper, I looked at the trade market for catchers last month and listed a number of names that were rentals and some that were controllable beyond the current season. The latter group is probably off limits now (with the exception of the aforementioned McCann and Norris), but a number of potential rentals figure to be available. Carlos Ruiz still draws plenty of walks for the rebuilding Phillies and could at the very least provide some OBP from behind the plate. The Rockies have wilted as of late, falling to 9.5 games back in their division and 6.5 games back of the second Wild Card spot. If Nick Hundley hasn8217t already been placed on trade waivers, he very well could be in the near future. It8217s no certainty that he8217d clear, but he8217s another affordable rental piece that could theoretically help Cleveland if he makes it to them unclaimed. Geovany Soto of the Angels represents another option that figures to land on trade waivers and could make his way to Cleveland, if he8217s not first blocked by a club like Detroit in an effort to prevent Cleveland from adding any sort of alternative to their incumbent options. Editor8217s Note: Soto was placed on the 15-day DL after this post was published. Likewise, Mariners catcher Chris Iannetta could hit the wire now that Mike Zunino is hitting well, but Iannetta is in a Norris-esque free fall at the moment himself. The Case for Staying the Course For all of their offensive woes behind the plate, the fact of the matter is that Cleveland is six games up on the AL Central. They8217re 10th in the Majors in terms of caught-stealing percentage from their catchers, having halted exactly one third of the attempts against them, and more impressively, the Indians have had the fewest steals attempted against them of any MLB team 8212 just 57 tries. It8217s still possible that Gomes returns from a separated shoulder next month and brings his strong framing skills and rocket arm with him, further increasing the club8217s defensive prowess. Any addition, at this point, would likely be made for the purposes of adding some punch to the postseason roster, but framing extra strikes (or simply ensuring that actual strikes on the fringe of the zone are called) and preventing stolen bases are of magnified importance in the playoffs. Cleveland could simply elect to prioritize those elements over adding another solid, but unspectacular bat to a lineup that has already scored the fourth-most runs in baseball even with a dearth of offensive production from behind the plate.
